I never read this classic children's fantasy tale as a child and I have no doubt in my mind it would have been better if I had. Don't get me wrong! These books were wonderful and enchanting, but quite simple. I guess I'm used to stories with more intricate plot lines to follow and I often found myself becoming bored while reading through the chapters. I didn't get through all seven books in this volume as I was mostly interested in getting through Chronicles before the movie premiered, so it's possible that my impression might have changed if I'd finished them all (for better or worse, who knows?)

On a whole I still recommend these books to anyone interested in fantasy fiction. It's incredibly interesting to look at a book that was written at the same time as Lord of the Rings (also by someone who swapped plot outlines and ideas with Tolkien) and which went on to help shape the entire fantasy genre that we know so well today
